Samuel and Jane Turnbough migrated from Greenville, South Carolina to Hickman, Tennessee by 1820 census. By the 1830 census they had moved to Chariton County, MO. By the 1840 census they have moved to Crawford County, MO. No slaves appear on on their census information. Chariton County is in the north central area of MO north and south of the Missour River in a region that became known as Little Dixie. Early settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky brought their slaves and slaveholding traditions to this area. Like Tennessee and Kentucky, hemp and tobacco were grown. Over the years small farms became larger plantations with a higher percentage of slave population. Family records indicate Samuel and Jane moved from Chariton County, MO to Crawford County, MO in about 1837. Crawford County is in south central MO.
